John noticed how Desiree had an affinity with animals. Her kindness to even the smallest, most annoying of buzzing creatures that tortured and munched on John's English flesh consistently. But there is more to it.
You see, when Desiree eight years old, she had this experience. She was walking the Miners Ravine trail one day, enjoying the sunshine, when she heard this squeaky voice say "Hey.... got any nuts? Got any Nuts? Hey! Hey!". Desiree looked around and saw nobody and kept walking. Again the voice came. "I said have you got any nuts?". The voice came from a tree which made no sense. And then she thought it came from a squirrel, which made even less sense. But the squirrel looked from the tree, and spoke again to Desiree. "I said... got any nuts?". Gasp. "You can talk? But... how?". "I can always talk", replied the squirrel, but nobody listens, or can understand me". "Well I can understand you. Let's get you some nuts". The squirrel thanked Desiree as they walked and hopped together, collecting acorns where ever they found them and having a splendid day.
Nobody knows how Desiree obtained this awesome power. It turned out she could speak with all animals, and as Desiree grew older, she became best friends with many. Most of the time, they were so uncomplicated compared to people... most of the time! There was this one time when she was walking through the woods where most of her animal friends tended to enjoy, when she heard someone screaming for their life. She ran to where the sounds were coming from, and to her surprise, there was a big wolf snarling and snapping at a quivering white lamb.
"Wait! Wait! What are you doing?" exclaimed Desiree as she fearlessly jumped between the wolf and the lamb.
"I am hungry and this lamb is my supper!" Said the wolf between snaps of his dribbling sharp teeth. "Don't let him eat me!" said the delicate lamb as she cowered behind Desiree.
"Now Mr Wolf... we can't have you bullying or biting other animals!". "But I need food!" howled wolf in hunger pain. "What if I told you that us humans have lots of food to eat? Lots of meat! I can give you mine too!". "Nooooo" said the wolf. "I need to eat this yummy lamb!". "You simply cannot. And if you do, I will personally take all your teeth out so you can never eat again!". This gave pause for the wolf. He stopped snapping as he thought abut it. "You promise to give me meat?". "Yessssssss!".
The wolf agreed and Desiree went straight to get the wolf a Sour Dough Jack. The lamb was ever so grateful.
When John heard of Desiree's exploits, he was amazed. "You see... being a super hero is not about wearing capes. It is about what good or kindness you show". Now that made Desiree smile!
